Eric Weisman is a graduate human physician with doctoral-level training in physiology, pathology, radiology, and nutrient applications for human disease. A practicing vegetarian for many years, he operated a home rescue shelter for cats, dogs, birds, and ferrets — and grew deeply concerned about the patterns of illness he observed in animals fed conventional commercial food.

In 1986, he began investigating pet food plants and rendering facilities firsthand. Inspired by his father, Paul Weisman, PharmD, and working with animal nutritionist Darwin Brightsman, PhD, he spent three years perfecting a formula built entirely on plant protein and plant oil — no rendering by-products, no chemical preservatives — that fully met NRC and AAFCO standards for all life stages.

In 1989, against the prevailing veterinary consensus, he launched Evolution Diet: the world's first organic, non-GMO, plant-protein-based cat and dog food. Today, independent peer-reviewed studies from the University of Guelph and Prof. Andrew Knight have validated what Eric observed in his own shelter more than 35 years ago.
